Vegan Dessert Shop In Philadelphia

There’s an on going myth about vegan desserts; if it’s healthy it won’t taste good. Well as one of the many people who have believed this myth, I’m here to debunk it. It is just not true. To put it differently, I was blown away after just one bite of Sweet Freedom Bakery’s baked goods; a vegan dessert shop in Philadelphia.

Sweet Freedom Bakery is the first vegan bakery in Philadelphia. Philadelphia is a city known for it’s food like the pretzels and especially the cheese steak, which are full of gluten. Co-owner Alison became overwhelmed by the fact that there weren’t many vegan restaurants in the city. Therefore she took matters into her own hand and after much research and a few trials and errors she opened the first vegan shop in Philadelphia.

In contrast to the other up and coming vegan shops in and around Philly now, Sweet Freedom Bakery uses real food. As in they do not use substitute foods in their baked goods. To emphasize, they do not use chemically created egg substitutes to bake with, instead they use apple sauce and flax. Both of which has the same consistency as an egg does in vegan baking. In addition to using real foods, Sweet Freedom Bakery prides themselves on being gluten-free, allergen-free, dairy free, nut-free and more. Another key point is that they use some form of coconut in their baked goods, be it coconut sugar, milk or raw coconut flakes. It’s definitely safe to say they’ve covered all their basis.

With attention to the fact that I’ve never had vegan desserts before, except vegan ice cream {no surprise there}, I was excited about my visit. That is to say I was pretty open to the experience and couldn’t wait to try all the treats, which Jen {co-owner} suggested I tried. I had the pleasure of having the donut, cupcake, oat crumble and what they call a magic bar.

Chocolate Donut

This donut isn’t your typical run of the mill donut {see what I did there? lol}. To begin with it’s a cake donut which was surprisingly rich and delicious. It’s made with vegan ingredients such as Garbanzo bean flour and a familiar ingredient; cocoa powder, which helps with that rich chocolatey flavor. Its topped with chocolate glaze and chocolate chips. Plus two special ingredient in the middle; caramel sauce and coffee grounds, vegan of course! Regardless on how I feel about chocolate, I was impressed by not only the quality but the taste as well.

Magic Bar

Is exactly that, a bar, but certainly not like those store bought bars. Not only was it moist and flavorful, I appreciated the thin layer of vegan dairy-free chocolate ganache and especially the coconut flakes. The chocolate was not overwhelming and the specks of coconut helped to balance that flavor. Another key point is that unlike most traditionally made bars, the magic bar is flavorful and not overly sweet. Two combinations I particularly enjoy.

Fruit Oat Crumble

Omg of all four {4} desserts, this was absolutely my most favorite! What exactly is the fruit oat crumble? Above all, it’s yummy goodness lol! In addition to that, it is a baked cookie base crust topped with cooked fruits and an oat crumble, then refrigerated. On any occasion you can get the fruit oat crumble in a variety of different fruit flavors. On my visit the flavor of the day was apple. To say I was impressed would be an understatement, as I couldn’t stop eating it. Even after leaving the shop I was still eating it. The crumble reminded me of a granola bowl. Which would make it a great breakfast choice.

Berry Cupcake

I couldn’t resist the chance to have my first and a half love; cupcakes. After all I made a living off these cuties for quite a few years. By all means I had to have a vegan cupcake. Plus the fact that they had a berry vanilla flavor, made it even more irresistible. Now you already know how much I truly adore vanilla flavored desserts, even so I would have preferred a stronger vanilla flavor in these cupcakes. I however enjoyed the frosting, which is made from coconut milk and strawberry puree and a few other vegan ingredients. The jam beneath the frosting was a nice addition and like the frosting, was not sweet. Nevertheless I enjoyed my first vegan cupcake.

Sweet Freedom Bakery is truly vegan in every sense of the word. I was left satiated and happy with my experience. I’m still in awe of how great everything tasted. I’m absolutely inspired to whip up a few vegan recipes now, of course after a thorough research.

Thank you to the lovely ladies at Sweet Freedom Bakery for having me; Jen, Morgan and Summer.
